Algarve

Beaches, mountains, golf and friendliness.
Reasons which make the Algarve one of the tourist hot spots of Portugal. 200 kms of pristine coastline, numerous great beaches, extraordinary natural and cultural heritage, the experience of knowing how to welcome visitors, quality food and wine and centuries old traditions.

Far from just being a summer tourist destination, the Algarve welcomes visitors throughout the year with open arms. History tells us that the Algarve was the last region to become part of Portugal. Conquered from the Moors in 1292, even today it is possible to see numerous facets of Arab culture. One of the most striking examples is a typical Algarve house. The colourful façades, the rooftop terraces and the typical chimneys are unique aspects of Algarve architecture which give a feel of real authenticity to the buildings of the region.
There is also Muslim influence behind a number of the crops grown in the Algarve. Orange groves and almond trees abound and it is the almond which serves as the basis for the region’s best desserts, such as Dom Rodrigos and almond cheese. Nor can we talk of the Algarve without mentioning its amazing fish.

Fishing continues to be one of the main activities for locals, especially in Olhão, Portimão and Tavira. This tradition means that dining out can include great dishes such as tuna steaks in tomato sauce, mackerel with garlic, sand eel rice and stuffed squid.

A significant proportion of the beaches with an EU Blue Flag in Portugal are in the Algarve. There is a two hundred km long coastline with beaches for every taste, rocky or fine sand and with crystal clear warm water. Ideal for swimming, the sea in the Algarve is also great for surfing, especially in the west, as well as for diving. The Algarve is a golfer’s paradise as you can find some of the best courses in the world here, designed by famous architects and lying within amazing scenery.
